Is the inside okay? I worried.

The snake had survived so much already. I didn’t want to release it too soon. That was the same reason we were looking after Beauty—to give her the best chance possible.

Dad called Mom on video chat and filled her in on our rescue. I held the snake in front of the camera so she could get a better look.

“It feels a bit cool,” I said.

“Poor thing had a stressful day. I bet it will soak up the sun and rest after this ordeal. From what I can see, it looks like it will be fine. You all should be so proud of yourselves!” Mom said. She glanced away. “My next patient is ready, so I have to run.” She waved at us before ending the video call.

Emma picked up her phone and scrolled through some of the pictures. “This was epic!” she declared.

Now that Mom had given the okay, it was time to release the snake. We walked to the shallow creek behind our house to set it free. Nolan still kept his distance.

When we got to a rocky area, I squatted down and released the snake. It slithered off before stopping to rest on a rock in the bright June heat.

I smiled proudly. Mom was right. So was Emma—this was epic! I wondered what was in store next—aside from a much-needed shower.
